Ko Wai Au - Who am I? Hi, I'm Kara. I'm the founder and Manahautū of NZStreetlighting. For more than fourteen years I've worked across electricity procurement, public lighting and infrastructure strategy, helping organisations make better decisions about electricity, assets and the communities they serve. Today, I am recognised as one of New Zealand's leading specialists in Dark Sky and public lighting, working at the intersection of road safety, responsible electricity, environmental stewardship and infrastructure strategy.
People often ask why I chose such a specialised industry. The answer is simple. I love solving problems. Whether it's designing a new calculator, questioning conventional thinking or simplifying a complex electricity contract, I'm happiest when there's a challenge to understand and a better solution waiting to be discovered.
My brain has always worked this way. I enjoy questioning the norm, connecting seemingly unrelated ideas and finding practical solutions that others may not have considered. I believe the best decisions are grounded in facts, supported by good data and delivered with common sense.
My approach is practical. I'm just as comfortable in jeans and gumboots as I am presenting to executives. I value honesty, accountability and people who know their craft. I have a hearty laugh, a curious mind and a healthy respect for evidence. The best outcomes are always achieved when good people work together.
That philosophy extends well beyond business. The people I choose to work with are experts in their own fields. Together we manage millions of dollars of public investment and hundreds of thousands of public assets. We take that responsibility seriously.
We are kaitiaki. Looking after public infrastructure also means looking after the places where it exists. Roads, communities, waterways, wildlife and our precious night skies all deserve thoughtful consideration alongside safety, engineering and commercial responsibility.
Away from work you'll usually find me on our lifestyle property tending cattle, pigs, dogs and an ever-expanding garden of rare and interesting plants. If I'm not there, chances are I'm parked beside the West Coast in our caravan or out chasing fish.
One of the most rewarding things I do is foster abandoned and orphaned neonatal puppies. My dog pack and I step in when they're at their most vulnerable, caring for them until they're ready to find their forever homes. The sleepless nights are worth every minute.
Ultimately, my purpose is simple. To leave things better than I found them. To be a good human. And to help others be the same.
Over time, I've realised my work has never really been about electricity or streetlighting. It's about making the next best decision. It's about leaving infrastructure stronger, protecting the environment, spending public money wisely and helping people understand complexity with confidence.
The philosophy behind NZStreetlighting is grounded in values that shape both my business and the way I choose to live.
Āta reminds me to act intentionally, thoughtfully and deliberately.
Kaitiakitanga reminds me that we are stewards of the infrastructure, environment and public resources entrusted to us.
Manaakitanga reminds me that every relationship matters, and that caring for people is just as important as delivering great outcomes.
Rangatiratanga reminds me to lead with integrity, courage and accountability.
These aren't just business values. They are life values. They guide every conversation, every project and every decision.
I am guided by Āta Pō. Grounded in kaitiakitanga. Driven by curiosity.
Because every great outcome begins with one simple question... What is the next best decision?
