Understanding New Zealand's Electricity Industry
New Zealand has one of the world's most renewable electricity systems, with around 85% of generation coming from hydro, geothermal and wind resources. As demand grows and electrification accelerates, the industry continues to evolve through investment in generation, transmission, distribution and smarter energy management.
At first glance, the electricity industry can seem straightforward—but behind every light switch is a complex network of organisations working together.
At the national level, Transpower owns and operates the high-voltage transmission grid that moves electricity around Aotearoa. From there, 29 electricity distribution businesses (lines companies) own and maintain the local networks that deliver electricity to homes, businesses and public infrastructure. Electricity retailers purchase energy from the wholesale market and supply it to customers, managing contracts, billing and customer service. Many retailers are also gentailers, meaning they both generate and retail electricity.
Roadside electricity has another layer of complexity. Public lighting is typically billed using either metered data or calculated load profiles, supported by asset inventories, connection records and detailed reporting. Ensuring the right assets are connected, the right data is being used and the right charges are being applied requires experience, diligence and a deep understanding of the industry.
That's where NZStreetlighting comes in.
We work across the entire electricity ecosystem—bringing together transport agencies, councils, electricity retailers, lines companies and infrastructure owners to make informed decisions, improve data quality and deliver better long-term outcomes.
Understanding how all these pieces fit together isn't always easy. Fortunately, it's what we do every day. And yes... we usually manage to have a laugh or two along the way.
